You walk into the room like so many others. A figure is curled up on the hospital bed. She hears your step, turns, and meets your gaze. At that moment you recognize who she really is — a mother, a wife, a sister, a child. Today, you will make a difference in her life. You are her nurse.
We all recognize that old cliché – “making a difference.” Many of us almost cringe when we hear those words. But the truth is, nursing is about making a difference.
When I think about the rewards of nursing, I remember being at the bedside of an elderly patient. I could almost see that this person shared a full life with generations of loved ones. I think that that was the draw - that was the nurturing piece of nursing. You make such a mark in people's lives.
In my career, I have most enjoyed meeting the multitude of personalities. Couple that with the medical issues, and nursing is fascinating. It is exciting!
