GERD Treatment Options

How many times have you finished dinner only to deal with the stinging pain of heartburn through the evening? If your answer is “too many,” you many be one of 60 million Americans who experience frequent Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). GERD occurs when the acid in our stomach climbs up the esophagus and creates a burning sensation in the chest and throat. While over-the-counter antacids may relieve your symptoms, if you find yourself taking them on a frequent basis, it is recommended that you see a physician to get to the root of the problem.

At the Comprehensive GI Center, we have the ability to monitor the pH levels throughout the esophagus to determine the severity of the reflux and decide what actions are necessary. Many patients are able to deal with GERD through lifestyle changes (see sidebar for some tips) and medications. Some patients may require more extensive options, like surgery. There are many new surgical options for patients; most exciting are the minimally invasive procedures, which will allow patients to overcome their frequent heartburn, with little time in the hospital and speedier recovery than standard open procedures.

One such procedure, Endoluminal Tissue Fusion, which is being performed by Daniel Turgeon, MD and Karim Trad, MD , is utilizes the EsophyX surgical device. EsophyX passed into the stomach through the mouth with the guidance of an endoscope, or small flexible camera. The device has the ability to fix the “broken valve” connecting the esophagus and stomach, and help patients move on to a life without heartburn.

This procedure is the ultimate in minimally invasive surgery in that it is incisionless, which means fewer complications, less pain, and a faster recovery when compared to other surgical options. While the surgery will require an overnight hospital stay, the recovery is rapid and the procedure provides prompt improvement in symptoms.
